Last week, we finally saw the first substantial snowfall of the season here in northern Illinois. The two things to note are 1) that it arrived about a month later than it used to, and 2) that it’s already melted. Overall, there was around 3″ in the heaviest spots, and it was cold enough that the ice fishermen were already placing their huts out on the lakes. Today it was 46°, but the forecast shows next Monday as being 15°. The long-running unfunny joke here has always been that in the Chicagoland area, “you can see all four seasons in a day” – and to an extent, that’s been true. As a driver, that makes it challenging when reacting to a mix of dry pavement, heavy snow, ice or wetness. With that in mind, Goodyear has unleashed their latest tire – the Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady, which they say is their best “for Mother Nature’s worst.” Rated for rain, snow, ice and sun, they’re so confident in this tire, they’re outright calling it “the best all-weather tire in company history.” For the sake of perspective, Goodyear introduced their first all-weather tire back in 1908!

My wife’s car is a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox, and it’s been riding on Goodyears for a long time. She puts a lot of miles on that car, racking up around 80-a-day for her round-trip to-and-from work. That made her vehicle the prime candidate for a new all-weather tire, so I took it down to my friends at Just Tires to get a set of Assurance WeatherReady tires put on. Conveniently, I did this the morning after the snowfall, which meant I was able to put them to the test on both clear pavement and snow-covered dirt roads. After driving on these for a week now, they’re a smooth ride when it’s dry, and on snow and ice they’ve got some great bite. I’m actually looking forward to hitting some deeper snow in the near future.

Check out the features that come packed into every set of Assurance WeatherReady tires…

Weather Reactive Technology™:

  • As the tire wears, Evolving Traction Grooves™ transition from deep grooves to wide grooves to help displace water on the road.
  • Tredlock Technology® allows the tread to lock together while cornering and open for more biting edges when you need enhanced wet traction.

Other specialized features include:

  • Sweep tread grooves to force water away while driving
  • Zigzag biting edges for dependable grip in the snow and ice
  • Asymmetric tread for predictable traction and noise reduction
  • Specialized tread compounds to help grip the road in wet, snow and ice – earning Severe Snow Certification

Assurance WeatherReady is available in a wide range of sizes, from 15 to 20 inches and compatible with 77 percent of cars, minivans and SUVs on the road today. Popular potential fitments for Assurance WeatherReady tires include the Toyota Camry, Corolla and Highlander; the Ford Edge, Escape and Explorer; the Honda Accord, Civic and CR-V; the Hyundai Sonata and Santa Fe; the Nissan Altima and Rogue; and the Chevrolet Cruze and Equinox.

Goodyear backs Assurance WeatherReady tires with a 60,000 mile / 95,000 kilometer limited treadwear warranty. Assurance WeatherReady is available at Goodyear.com, Sam’s Club and many retailers across the country, including Just Tires and Goodyear Auto Service.

goodyear alignment

Now, new tires are great, but caring for them is important as well. You should always get your tires rotated every 6,000 miles or so to keep them wearing evenly, and alignment is also key. Since my wife’s car hadn’t had an alignment in a bit, I had the guys at Just Tires put it on the rack to make sure it’s riding straight. That’s something I highly recommend, especially if it’s been awhile since your car has had an alignment.
