The leaves on the trees are finally changing and that means one thing: fall is here. Grab yourself a pumpkin spice latte and say hello to all things sugar, spice, and of course, everything nice.

With an autumn scented candle wafting through your home, you can tackle anything, including preparing your home for the fall season. Here are some tips to create the coziest atmosphere for your home this fall.

Check Your Heating

Before some of the more fun stuff can begin, there are a few logistics you should get out of the way first. For example, you’re going to want to be sure your heating system is working properly before the colder months come. While cuddling up with a fuzzy blanket is a perfect fall activity, you’re not going to want to be without heat.

In a typical house, about 20% to 30% of the air that moves through the duct system is lost due to leaks, holes, and poorly connected ducts. For this reason, getting your heating system checked out before the fall sets is a smart idea. Your ducts should be cleaned every three to five years anyway, so while you or the contractor is up there, be sure to check for any holes or disconnected ducts. This will help keep your home warm and cozy.

That said, gas fireplaces that have no vents passing to the exterior are becoming more popular for remodeling work and in new-construction homes. If you’re someone with a gas fireplace, be sure to check that you have enough fuel to get you through the winter. Staying warm is very important, even if the maintenance for it is a bit dull.

Decor

Fall decorations are where the fun comes in. Whether it be classic fall decor or Halloween decor, your decor can really change the atmosphere of space. Autumn scented candles or pies in the oven all help with the aroma of fall. While you’re apple picking for your pie, be sure to grab a few pumpkins as well for the front porch. Some cotton web can go a long way as well into making your home a giant spider web. Let yourself get carried away a bit. The excitement of fall is what will carry you and your family through until winter.

Fall is the perfect time to start getting festive. Putting up your decor will help to make everyone a bit more cheery. And if you’re preparing to host, consider covering one wall with a mirror to create the illusion of more space. Though the holidays are for being together, no one will mind if it seems like there’s plenty of space for everyone to be comfortable.

Getting the home ready for fall is all about the way the house makes you feel when you come inside. You want your decor to be inviting, calming, and warm. Warm colors, comfortable blankets and couches, and familiar scents are all ways to do this. If you don’t have any decor, almost any seasonal store will have a vast display. It doesn’t have to be a lot to significantly improve the home.
