“We really wanted the story to stand alone – not to rely on the music, or simply feel like a music video,” explains RECESS MONKEY Bassist/Vocalist Jack Forman about “Lighter Than Air,” which follows “Penguinese” as the latest video from their forthcoming new album, HOT AIR. Forman, who co-wrote the single with bandmates Drew Holloway (Guitar/Vocals) and Korum Bischoff (Drums) also took the reigns on animation and editing for the video, which we’re debuting today here on THE ROCK FATHER Magazine. The clip will be included when the album hits the streets on June 16 as a CD/DVD Combo. “While the songs inspired story elements to some degree, we really treated them more like underscoring,” he adds, noting that “the big challenge was to create something that was both ‘peppy’ but also celebrated meandering – [since] so much of the progression is what happens when Andrew and the Penguin are aimless and open to making discoveries.” Check out the video below!
The cut paper animation on display throughout the HOT AIR DVD is real, the result of a five-month process by Forman, who shot the live-action elements first, and then built-up the world around them. The end result is a wonderful and whimsical 40-minute visual accompaniment for what’s truly a great album, period. If you take the “kindie” label away, HOT AIR is just a great pop-rock album, and one that listeners of all ages need to hear. And yes, there is a VAN HALEN patch not-so-hidden in plain sight, right there at the top of the balloon.
