This week, Disney Junior’s SOFIA THE FIRST scored a whopping six Daytime Emmy Award Nominations, among them a nod for “Best Preschool Animated Program.” The appeal of Sofia has been widespread since the beginning, as the series’ ratings have just been massive, and the show has attracted an audience of kids – girls and boys alike – who have been immersed in the Kingdom of Enchancia. A couple of weeks ago, when both of my girls were home recovering from a nasty virus that had been going around, we threw an indoor beach party in a cold, rainy day – all while checking out the DVD release of SOFIA THE FIRST: THE FLOATING PALACE.
Now, we’d already had this one on DVR at one point, recorded from it’s initial airing last November, but it’s got a lot of repeat value, and there’s just something about mermaids – especially THE LITTLE MERMAID – that really appeals to my girls. Disney has been creative in working characters from their existing Disney Princess properties into the realm of SOFIA, and here we get an appearance from Ariel herself.
With Sofia meeting a mermaid named Oona, and helping free her from the tangles of a fishing net, we learn that Sofia’s magical amulet has a new power – one that can turn the young princess into a mermaid herself, taking the adventure under the sea (cue Sebastian). Keeping the tradition of teaching alive, we’re presented with a story about trust, and how sometimes those who are different must overcome predisposed misconceptions, and give others a chance.

While the show and DVD itself are certainly cute, we did our indoor beach party with a few added SOFIA accents that the folks at Disney sent us – all of which are available exclusively at Disney Store, right now as the warm weather for real outdoor fun approaches:
SOFIA THE FIRST: THE FLOATING PALACE includes the special presentation, along with three bonus episodes, and a pair of cloth friendship bracelets (while supplies last).
The Rock Father Rating: 4/5 Stars
