Toy Review: The Sheriff Callie’s Wild West Collection from Just Play

Over the past year or so, SHERIFF CALLIE’S WILD WEST has become a pretty big hit for Disney Junior, and for us here at Rock Father HQ. In fact, with a second season on the way, Callie and the crew are very much a part of the “Trinity” of Disney Junior series’ here – right alongside DOC McSTUFFINS and SOFIA THE FIRST. With Mandy Moore voicing the titular Calico cat, kids can get some Wild West-style adventure with an underlying message of problem solving and working with others. One question I’ve seen posted quite frequently on my social networks is “where are the toys?” – and right now, the answer is simple: Target. Launched a few months back, Just Play has issued a full assortment of toys straight out of Nice and Friendly Corners, and ready for plenty of big adventures. The Rock Daughters recently received a sampling for review, and we’re sharing a look today with a new installment of our UNBOXED video series, and some thoughts from yours truly…

Sheriff Callie Bean &  Medium Plush Assortments: These are the ones that I refer to as “small plushies” and “large plushies” in the video above, and both offer the four principal characters – Sheriff Callie, Sparky, Toby and Deputy Peck – in two different sizes. Based on whatever your space or budget will allow, these carry a suggested retail price of $19.99 on the Medium and $8.99 each for the Bean. They’re soft and cuddly, yet durable. Ours have even been venturing beyond the house and into the yard here at Rock Father HQ for some spring fun in the playhouse.

Sheriff Callie Callie-oke Sing Along Doll: With a moving animatronic mouth and side-to-side dancing action, the Callie-oke Sing Along is a fine companion that I’d recommend in lieu of the Medium plush. She’s scaled at just slightly larger than her non-singing counterpart, but makes for a great leader among the other residents of Nice and Friendly Corners. The cool thing here is that she sings the entire theme song (not just a piece, as so many other toys tend to do). Press the badge and she’s ready to rock – and here she rocks often. 

Sheriff Callie Figure Packs: While we received the two available two-packs (Sheriff Callie & Sparky/Toby & Deputy Peck), there’s a five-pack available (MSRP $14.99) that includes an exclusive Priscilla Skunk figure. There’s minimal articulation, and Deputy Peck is nearly impossible to make stand (tiny, tiny feet), but that matters not when it comes to these. We’ve actually noticed that “action” features don’t really impact play value… at least for Little Miss Finley. 

She has hundreds of figurines and action figures, and regardless of how many or how few points of articulation they have, the adventures are the same and it’s not even questioned.

Beyond these, Just Play also has some cool role-play items available including the Howdy-Do Hoedown Dress and matching Cowgirl Hat.

After having our collection of Sheriff Callie’s Wild West Toys here at HQ for about a month, I can heartily deem these to be Rock Father (and Daughter) Approved, as Just Play continues to impress with toys that become regular fixtures of daily play.
