STAR WARS Comic Books head to MARVEL in 2015…

This article is more than 10 years old and may not have been updated since our last site redesign. It may contain outdated information or could be missing images.

Two STAR WARS related stories in one day? That’s a bit different here on The Rock Father, but I can’t complain (here’s the first one), as The Force is strong here at Rock Father HQ, and has been since the release of STAR WARS back in 1977. If you haven’t heard, Disney announced today that the STAR WARS Comic Books will be returning to MARVEL Comics in 2015 after being handled by the folks at Dark Horse for more than two decades. It was the MARVEL books that I first experienced as a kid in the late 70s and early 80s, but it was the great treatment by Dark Horse that really helped place STAR WARS back on the map in the 1990s. But, with MARVEL being owned by Disney, a lot of people have seen this move coming since it was announced that Disney bought Lucasfilm back in 2012.

“Dark Horse Comics published exceptional Star Wars comics for over 20 years, and we will always be grateful for their enormous contributions to the mythos, and the terrific partnership that we had. In 2015, the cosmic adventures of Luke, Han, Leia, and Chewbacca will make the lightspeed jump back to Marvel, to begin a new age of adventures within the Star Wars universe.”Carol Roeder, director of Lucasfilm franchise publishing, Disney Publishing Worldwide.

STAR WARS of the 1980sLike many, I have some mixed feelings about this, but honestly, it’s been quite awhile since I’ve read a new STAR WARS title out of Dark Horse. This MARVEL move is more of a tie-in to the glory days, and it’s just the kind of move that will inspire me to check out what MARVEL has cooking when those first books arrive.

I still have a select few books from my youth, and if you look very closely at the image on the left, you can see the words “Jimmy Zahn” written on the cover of MARVEL’s STAR WARS #68 (from February of 1983) right next to Boba Fett’s helmet. I used to take it with me to school.

Now, if only Disney would make MARVEL go back to printing on newsprint so that these books would be more affordable for actual kids to read on a daily basis… (will never happen).

As for Dark Horse, should they be looking for a new saga to help fill the massive void left behind by the absence of STAR WARS, I know of a series (because I wrote it) that has many more adventures planned, but needs a new publisher (I’m trying to use a Jedi Mind Trick on you, Dark Horse). Seriously.

“We here at Marvel could not be more excited to continue the publication of Star Wars comic books and graphic novels. The perennial brand of Star Wars is one of the most iconic in entertainment history and we are honored to have the opportunity to bring our creative talent pool to continue, and expand Star Wars into galaxies far, far away.”Marvel worldwide publisher and president, Dan Buckley
