This is one of those posts where I have to preface things with the old “if you’re new to the site” bit, as simply tossing up an item with STAR WARS in the title is bound to bring a few new readers in my general direction. You see, when it comes to STAR WARS, I’m old school – a kid that was there in the beginning, amassed an incredible collection of the vintage Kenner toys, saw those get sold in the late 80s, rekindled the collecting bug in ’97, turned the whole thing into an addiction, and eventually sold 90% of what I had after “kicking the habit.” I’ve also worked on a film about STAR WARS, and did a song about the saga that popped up on TheForce.net and was later featured right here on THE ROCK FATHER. So when news landed here this morning about a documentary on STAR WARS action figures? Yeah, I’m in. Like no toys before them, Star Wars toys were a phenomenon that swept the nation, permanently transforming both the toy and movie industries, and ultimately creating a hobby that, 30 years later, still holds sway over its fans.
Plastic Galaxy is a documentary that explores the groundbreaking and breathtaking world of Star Wars toys. Through interviews with former Kenner employees, experts and authors like Steve Sansweet and Gus Lopez, and of course collectors, it looks at the toys’ history, their influence, and the fond and fervent feelings they elicit today.
