So here we are with TEMPLE BALLS and their brand-new album, Temple Balls (yes, self-titled, out now via Frontiers Music). Before we dive into the songs, I’ve got two issues to get off my chest so we can move forward with a clean slate. Full discloshe?

First off, I hate the band’s name. I really do. That’s my own personal hang-up, I admit it. Because musically, these guys absolutely kick ass. Their songs are full of catchy hooks for days. That name is just unfortunate for me.

Secondly, I’ve always had a problem with bands releasing a self-titled album several records into their career. In my mind, that move should be reserved for your debut — or maybe a comeback record after a long hiatus. I mean Hell, pick one of the song titles and make that the record’s title. Problem solved, right?

But hey, that’s just me. Now that I’ve gotten those pet peeves out of the way, let’s talk about the music.

Right out of the gate, we get a trio of winners with “Flashback Dynamite,” “Lethal Force,” and “Tokyo Love.” All three deliver big hooks and high energy — absolute smashers — the kind of tracks that get people moving immediately.

“We Are the Night” and “Hellbound” keep that momentum going (and no, it’s not the WARLOCK song of the same name). Then there’s “Soul Survivor,” which stands as one of my personal favorites on the entire record.

Look, at the end of the day, this is a great album from a great band. Even if I have a couple of personal gripes, there’s no denying the skill and songwriting on display here. Because it’s there in spades.

The record is out now — give it a spin and see what you think.

STANDOUT TRACKS: “Soul Survivor,” “Tokyo Love,” “Hellbound,” “Flashback Dynamite”
