I’m a huge fan of cover songs in which an artist manages to put a creative spin on a classic (or not-so-classic) song while honoring and respecting the original work. In most cases, I’d argue that the best songs are the ones that can transcend genres and speak to audiences in new ways.
Call it a personal quirk, but despite my love of creative covers, I always raise an eyebrow when someone approaches Faith No More. After all, Faith No More is my favorite band of all time, and I have the unique distinction of being a footnote in its history as the “Z” in Faith No More Followers’ A to Z of Angel Dust.
The results when tacking Faith No More tend to be mixed, with many leaning into the “not-so-hot” side of things, but Cody Jinks moved the needle into the side of perfection with his take on the band’s “Take This Bottle.” Crank up the volume, and check out the lyric video below…
The modern outlaw with thrash metal roots brings a Texas flavor to the song from Faith No More’s 1995 album, King For A Day… Fool For A Lifetime, reinventing it for a new audience — and a new generation — that may believe it’s an original composition, and that’s okay.
Aided by the vocals of Pearl Aday, Jinks’ version of “Take This Bottle” is a superb duet that zeroes in on the already-there country twang of the original track and creates something new that just may encourage someone out there to sober up and kick the bottle themselves.
Cody Jinks is currently on tour supporting Luke Combs. His new album, Change the Game, is out now on Late August Records.
