I have to admit, I was having some serious childhood flashbacks when putting together our new Bachmann Trains Mountain Master HO Scale Ready-to-Run Train Set earlier this month. Exclusive to Menards stores this holiday season, this 155-piece set is everything you need to get your kids started with electric trains, and a set that’s a lot of fun for grownups as well, thus gaining it a spot in my 2013 Holiday Gift Guide here on The Rock Father.

When I was a kid, I had Bachmann Trains’ Santa Fe Flyer (or some variation of it), and remember heading over to the local “Sports & Hobbies” store in Park Forest, Illnois to get accessories and supplies. Fast-forward three decades, and here I am, putting this set together with my oldest daughter, who is much younger than the suggested age of 14+ (as is the case for all electric trains), but under parental supervision – it’s cool. With all the vehicular play that goes on here at Rock Father HQ, a train was something that was missing, and as you can see in the video above, is very much enjoyed and appreciated.
2013 Menards Mountain Master Train Set:
Powered by a mighty Santa Fe 0-6-0 locomotive with operating smoke and headlight, this train will conquer the highest peaks to deliver its important cargo. The Mountain Master 155-piece set includes all the miniature people, buildings, and structures you’ll need to begin your own railroad adventure. Available exclusively at your local Menards® Store.
This ready-to-run train set includes:
- 0-6-0 steam locomotive and tender with operating smoke and headlight
- Menards® Limited Edition plug-door box car
- Open quad hopper
- Single-dome tank car
- Off-center caboose
- Body-mounted E-Z Mate® couplers
- 47″ x 38″ oval of snap-fit E-Z Track®, including 12 pieces of curved track, 1 piece of straight track, and 1 plug-in terminal rerailer
- Suburban station
- Signal bridge
- 48 railroad and street signs
- 36 telephone poles
- 48 assorted figures
- Power pack and speed controller
- Illustrated instruction manual
While Addie and I did play with them for a bit, we opted against using all of our small accessory pieces on the floor since I do have a toddler roaming around here as well. That said, the “Plasticville” train station and signal bridge are pretty cool, though I would highly-recommend securing them together with some glue or modeling cement for a more permanent display.
The Exclusive Menards Mountain Master by Bachmann Trains is available in-stores, or online via Menards.com. It’s a Rock Father-approved gift that is truly timeless.
