Before we go any further, I feel that I must point out the fact that I’m a massive fan of OCEAN’S ELEVEN (2001) and the 1960 film that inspired it, OCEAN’S 11. Back in 2004, one of my many unusual adventures even found me working on the sequel, OCEAN’S TWELVE for one day, where I played a bartender (cut from the film) pouring drinks for Andy Garcia and his crew. Those films and their look inspired me so much, that I borrowed some of he slick vibe to inform my crime-horror project DEATH WALKS THE STREETS (which has always been intended to be a film series). All that said, the idea of an OCEAN’S sequel or spin-off has long-been intriguing, and now we have one in OCEAN’S 8. Directed by Gary Ross (The Hunger Games), the new film stars Sandra Bullock as Debbie Ocean, sister of George Clooney’s Danny Ocean, alongside a crew that includes Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna and Helena Bonham Carter. Check out the trailer below…
While I’m digging what I’m seeing in the trailer (though the Danny Ocean “grave” makes me raise an eyebrow), it’s a shame that longtime producer Jerry Weintraub isn’t around to see this one through. It’s said that he conceived the idea for this film alongside Steven Soderbergh and Clooney.
OCEAN’S 8 is in theaters on June 8, 2018 from Warner Bros. Pictures.
