Review: Robin McAuley Leads BLACK SWAN to Another Victory on ‘Paralyzed’

How on earth is Robin McAuley still singing at this level? The voice of the MSG (McAuley Schenker Group) puts vocalists 30 years his junior to shame. I say that because BLACK SWAN is back with album number three, Paralyzed (out now via Frontiers Music), and jeezus it’s an absolute ripper.

Backing McAuley is a lineup that includes guitarist Reb Beach (Winger, Whitesnake), bassist Jeff Pilson (Foreigner, The End Machine, ex-Dokken), and drummer Matt Starr (Ace Frehley, Mr. Big). Each brings serious chops and tasty, yet spicy ingredients, and together they cook up a rich rock n’ roll stew.

“Death of Me” was the clear winner for me from the first spin. Great structure and a catchy chorus. “Different Kind of Woman” leans into that classic, “back-in-the-day,” feel that reminds you rock songs can still be fun while delivering a punch and kicking ass.

“If I Was A King” shoots along like the luge at these latest Winter Games in Milan, making it another killer track for me. And let’s talk “Shakedown,” why don’t we? This one will buck you like the mechanical bull at Gilley’s after too many shots o’ tequila. And who among us, right?

Opener “When the Cold Wind Blows” and “The Fire and the Flame” lean into the band’s core strengths — melody, muscle, and tight execution. Meanwhile, the title track “Paralyzed” is built for raised fists and loud sing-alongs to get those asses up and moving, know what I mean?

“I’m Ready” shifts the tempo and adds a simmering groove — like a steak on the grill, cooked to perfection — and once again Mr. McAuley proves why he’s one of the best in the business.

“Carry On” highlights how locked in this band truly is, while Beach picks up the baton and runs with it, Usain Bolt-style. “Battered and Bruised” has a definitive swagger (like you’d find on a Friday night at the bar). I’m sure the folks love this one; I sure did!

Closer “What the Future Holds” wraps things up on a strong note — and if this album is any indication, the future should include plenty more from BLACK SWAN, ‘cuz if they build it, I will definitely come for years.

Bottom line? Paralyzed is another winner. If you’re into melodic hard rock played at a high level, this one deserves your attention. Now, if only I could see them live…
