If you’re an Entertainment Weekly subscriber (as I am), you have reason to be excited for a trip to the mailbox – Rogue One: A Star Wars Story takes the cover in the issue hitting this week. As a teaser, the team at EW has unleashed 15 new images from the film (see them here), but in that batch, two particularly stood out to me… a kid who was Darth Vader for Halloween on more that a few occasions in the early 1980s. As we know, Lord Vader is back in Rogue One (a story which takes place immediately prior to the events of 1977’s Star Wars), and what’s important is how he looks…
The most casual of Star Wars fans often think that “Darth Vader is Darth Vader,” but the reality is that his costume changed drastically over the course of the original trilogy, becoming more streamlined in the years between Star Wars and Return of the Jedi. The scale of things was altered, and when you look back at when we first saw him on screen, the rawness of his first appearance added to the menace… with details like red lenses in his mask – something that was properly captured recently in the Disney XD animated series, Star Wars Rebels. From the new stills of today, it’s clear that Vader is looking proper!
