I don’t know that most people expected DreamWorks’ Trolls to be as big as it’s been, particularly on the spin-off front. With its colorful characters, vibrant world, sing-along soundtrack and positive message, kids have been inspired to create their own Trolls-inspired projects that keep the spirit of “happy” going long after the end credits have rolled. Now, with the film having come home on Digital HD, Blu-ray and DVD, my friends at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment have partnered with a variety of writers and creative types (including yours truly) to come up with some fun projects to do at home. Armed with a box of supplies graciously delivered by the folks at Fox, The Rock Daughters™ and I set out to craft something awesome. Thing is, I realized after we were well underway that I’m just not very good at the whole “crafting” thing, and that there’s others out there who have some really impressive project ideas. But, that’s actually not what’s important – the real importance is in having fun and fostering creativity, no matter how things turn out.
For those looking for the perfect movie night Trolls craft, I’ve assembled a Pinterest Board (follow it here) that features a whole ton of rainbow-colored awesome. From free printables and papercrafts to cupcakes, candies and other sweet treats, there’s so many impressive ideas that are well-worth checking out.
Here at home, we used the Crayola Trolls Glitter Scrapbook Kit to really get rolling, and then used other tools from our supply box (felt, scissors, glitter glue, stamps, construction paper) along with some printables from the DreamWorks Create site to get rolling. The end result was essentially an exercise in “mixed media,” with a whole lot of glitter glue, but at least one of the pages came out looking an awful lot like what I would probably look like as a Troll. Layered in red and black paper and felt, with red streaks in the hair and the “fashion twins” popping up the background, out Trolls scrapbook began taking shape, and is something I anticipate will be a work-in-progress for some time to come.
Crafting fun aside, having Trolls to watch at home or on the go is pretty fantastic. The kids can’t get enough of the soundtrack, and with the Justin Timberlake-driven “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” having been nominated for an Academy Award for “Best Original Song,” they’re hardly alone. What’s awesome here is the “Party Mode” that comes on the Blu-ray. There’s a sing-along with on-screen lyrics to 15 songs; a “Troll Talk” exercise in repetitive speech; and a “Hug Time” feature that signals kids to give someone a hug whenever the glowing purple flower appears. And, in what I believe is a first here – the yellow, blue, green and red buttons on our Blu-ray remote now have a purpose – activating on-screen interactive features that kids will love! I need to go back and re-watch the movie sans kids just because I’ve missed things while they’ve been bopping around.
