UNBOXED: Skyrocket Toys’ New MINIONS Collection (Toy Review)

Published:

This article is more than 9 years old and may not have been updated since our last site redesign. It may contain outdated information or could be missing images.

When it comes to Summer Movies, the one leading the charge on the family front is MINIONS, according to a recent Fandango Family poll. The loveable villains from the world of DESPICABLE ME will be back in theaters on July 10th thanks to Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment, and if you’ve visited your local toy departments, you may have noticed that the aisles are already starting to look a little more yellow. With a hot movie comes a hot license, and MINIONS is no exception – with the folks at Skyrocket Toys serving-up some interesting items that are really well-placed for outdoor, summertime play. The Rock Daughters recently received a “Mystery Box” containing four items from the new collection, and I let them do a short episode of UNBOXED to capture their reactions as they took a peek at each for the very first time…

MINIONS Bike Helmet and Safety Pads: Technically the packaging calls this a “multi-sport” helmet, and that’s pretty accurate given it’s styling – which more closely resembles a skating helmet. Available in one eye or two, the helmet is durable, adjustable, and as you could see briefly in the video above – kids love wearing it. These are just hitting stores with a suggested retail of just $24.99 each, so beware of resellers who are already asking more than double. Patience can pay off, and the coordinating knee and elbow safety pads are an essential accessory, priced at around $14.99. My girls have a habit for getting pretty banged-up out there, so my fingers are crossed that we can avoid a few scrapes and bruises with these high-impact skid guards.

miniontongueMINIONS Goggle Swim Mask: While we don’t have a proper pool here at Rock Father HQ (we have a small inflatable), Addie got to try these out at Grandma’s the other day, and it was glorious. These Goggles also have some nose coverage, so make sure the kids don’t leave them on for too long. Suggested retail on these is $9.99, and they’re just part of a bigger selection of pool toys including Kickboards ($9.99), a Beach Ball ($2.99), Swim Ring ($2.99) and Water Wings ($2.99).

MINIONS Singing Sound Pad: Whether you prefer your MINIONS to be singing, laughing or speaking, this electronic keyboard is for you. Easy-play sheet music helps kids (and grownups) make the MINIONS harmonize to familiar melodies, like the little DIE HARD homage I did with “Ode to Joy” in the girls’ unboxing video. While they didn’t really know what to make of it at first, Finn particularly enjoys the Sound Pad, and does so on a frequent basis.

Look for all of these toys and more, available now – or soon – at your favorite retailer. MINIONS will be in theaters on July 10th. Pre-order tickets now via Fandango.

P.S. – For those wondering about the girls’ MINIONS shirts – Little Finley is wearing a MINIONS Hoodie from last Fall’s TARGET Halloween collection, while Addie is wearing a MINIONS T-shirt purchased at THE CHILDREN’S PLACE just this month.
