Vintage Kenner-style Star Wars Funko Pop! Vinyls are coming…

Star Wars 40th AnniversaryUPDATED WITH PACKAGING and UPC! There’s been some rumors floating for a bit that as part of the Star Wars 40th Anniversary celebration, Funko would be releasing some Pop! Vinyl bobbleheads that feature Star Wars characters done in a color scheme to match their original Kenner action figures from the 1970s and 80s. Concept art has been trading the back channels leading some to speculate on its authenticity, but tonight comes confirmation of at least three characters that rank among my childhood favorites: Hammerhead, Greedo and Walrus Man

Before they were given “official” names like Momaw Nadon and Ponda Baba, Hammerhead and Walrus Man were what a generation of kids called these patrons of the Mos Eisley Cantina – a “wretched hive of scum and villainy” that happened to become a legendary playset – and my favorite:

Hammerhead, Greedo and Walrus Man were all sold separately on individual cards during the classic Kenner era, but all three also were also included with that Sears-exclusive Cantina Adventure Playset, along with a fourth figure – Snaggletooth. That character was famously released as a blue-suited alien of normal height before being switched to a short fellow in a red suit to better match his on-screen appearance. “Blue Snaggletooth” remains a sought-after collectible, and appropriately, Funko already paid tribute with last year’s Smuggler’s Bounty edition of Snaggletooth that included both red and blue versions distributed at random.

Blue Snaggletooth

As my Blue Snaggletooth Pop! Vinyl has been lonely here at Rock Father HQ, it was confirmed on twitter that his three friends will be making their way into Walmart stores this month, all thanks to a tweet by Lucasfilm’s Matt Martin that received a nod from @officialfunko.

Now, Funko – how about a reproduction of that Cantina Adventure Set background? Gentle Giant made a big one a few years back…
