With Valentine’s Day officially upon us, it’s prime time to throw down a little more virtual ink devoted to MADLY MADAGASCAR one last time. After previewing the special and doing a giveaway here on The Rock Father in previous weeks, it felt fitting to hold off on my official review until now.

Madly MadagascarThe latest in a string of Holiday-themed spin-offs from the wildly popular MADAGASCAR franchise, MADLY MADAGASCAR follows MERRY MADAGASCAR as the second such special to gain a spot in our collection here at Rock Father HQ. After all, when the series began in 2005, I was still four years away from becoming The Rock Father.

Intended for television (but never airing for some reason), MADLY MADAGASCAR is a cute story that begins much like the 1980 film, THE GODS MUST BE CRAZY as a bottle of “Love Potion No. 9” perfume (in GODS it was a Coke bottle) is accidentally dropped from an airplane and into the possession of King Julien. With Valentine’s Day cheer being spread by Alex the Lion (a huge fan of the holiday), love is in the air – literally as King Julien begins selling sprays of Love Potion No. 9 as an actual love potion to the other inhabitants of the savanna.

Of course, things don’t go quite as planned, as Marty the Zebra soon finds himself the object of extreme lust and affection, being chased through the wild by a herd of animals with energy rivaling that of JUSTIN BIEBER fans stalking the pop star outside a concert venue.

Wrapped up in just 22 minutes, MADLY MADAGASCAR is a charming, but short tale that my little ones have enjoyed. We’ve already watched this three times thus far, and it will likely become a fixture of Valentine’s Day viewing for years to come.

Available on DVD from Walmart, or as a Digital Deluxe Edition (including two additional adventures not included on the DVD) from iTunes.
