Review: MicroTouch One Classic Safety Razor

This is unheard of. At no point in my 20+ year career reviewing things have I written and posted a review of a product on the very same day that I first tried it. They say there’s “a first time for everything,” and this is it… because the product in question is a razor, and it arrived today, and was used today. The experience is fresh in my mind, so here we are. Honestly, I just needed to shave today, and the MicroTouch One Classic Safety Razor arrived just in time. I last shaved on October 1st – I know this because I had a flight to catch the next day, and was getting prepped for it. It’s not really any great mystery that I’m sorta bad when it comes to shaving. It’s expensive, and just one more thing to work into my routine, and I skip it far too often. Having already found one razor that I love this year, the prospect of trying another was intriguing, and when the folks at Idea Village asked if I’d be up for going old-school, I had to accept.

Currently being touted by PAWN STARS’ Rick Harrison as “the modern version of a timeless classic,” the MicroTouch One is a classic safety razor – chrome-plated brass that contains a double-edged blade inside. Since barbers still use a single blade, many swear by these… but I’m of the generation that’s grown-up used to multiple blades in a variety of configurations. That said, using this for the first time was a little daunting.

After carefully getting set up with the very fine Dorco blades, I read through the instructions and began my first shave. Cutting through two weeks of growth was a slow-go, but probably because I was being overly-cautious, and really taking my time. I’d lathered up with some AXE shaving gel and hot water beforehand, and wasn’t really sure how much pressure to apply on the blades. But I survived…

Shaving with the Micro Touch One

It will probably take some time to really learn and refine my process, but my first old-school, single-blade shave was a success. It was not the closest shave I’ve ever had (that honor is still held by “The Lover’s Blade” that I reviewed earlier this year), but since the MicroTouch One came with 12, easily-washable blades (the multi-blade razors get all gunked-up), I’m going to stick with this one for awhile. An added bonus is that my wife loves it – the classic styling just strikes her fancy, and I can dig it. It’s a solid razor that feels sorta… classy. But for some reason I still missed a spot on my chin… same spot I’ve been missing for a few years now.
