In all the time that I’ve been doing THE ROCK FATHER, my little ones and I have never reviewed a puzzle. On the surface, the reason might be along the lines of what you might be thinking right now – “Why would you review a puzzle? – It’s a puzzle!” But, the thing is, I don’t believe that I’ve ever owned a Ravensburger Puzzle, and up until last week, I didn’t know just how profoundly different the quality of a puzzle could be.
Knowing what big fans of DisneyToon Studios’ PLANES series we are, the folks at Ravensburger sent us one of their new puzzle sets based on the recent release, PLANES FIRE & RESCUE. The “Real Rescue Planes” set features three 49-piece puzzles in one box, each measuring 8″ x 8″. Ravensburger has been making puzzles in Ravensburg, Germany (respect for my German heritage!) since 1891, and their exclusively developed, extra-thick cardboard pieces are combined with exclusive fine, linen-structured paper to create a glare-free puzzle image. Using steel cutting tools that have been designed and crafted by hand, no two pieces are alike, and the fit is flawless. You know those little scraps and fuzzies that you often find on the edges of puzzle pieces? None here, and that’s good because they annoy my five year-old. Even the backs of the pieces are covered with fine paper, and you can just feel the quality.
Recommended for ages 5+, Ravensburger touts their “Premium Puzzle, Perfect Age Fit,” and that means the size of the pieces are geared toward age groups based on years of experience. The PLANES FIRE & RESCUE series features puzzles for kids as young as 3 and up to 7+. Here we have Dusty Crophopper paired with helicopters Windlifter and Blade Ranger, all vibrantly reporting for duty.
Raving about a puzzle? Yes, raving about a Ravensburger… but the next time I go to buy some new puzzles for my girls and I to do, I will certainly be looking for that name on the box.
