The Flintstones and WWE. On the surface, you wouldn’t think that the two would work well together, but after Warner Bros. Animation and WWE Studios proved an unlikely pairing could work with last year’s hit Scooby-Doo! WrestleMania Mystery! (a sequel is already in the works), THE FLINTSTONES AND WWE: STONE AGE SMACKDOWN! has arrived on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD, once again presenting popular WWE Superstars and Divas in animated form. This time around, the action is prehistoric, and it’s actually surprising just how seamless it all goes. Funny enough, I’d actually been approached to share some thoughts on the film twice – once from WWE (as some of you know, I’m a WWE Brand Ambassador), and once from Warner Bros. Now we’re gonna give all of you a chance to win the film on Blu-ray combo pack, but first I’ll throw down a few words of my own about this craziness – an adventure 65,000,000 years in-the-making.
There’s a good chance that aside from the possibility that they’ve seen a commercial or enjoyed some FRUITY PEBBLES, younger kids of today are not super-familiar with THE FLINTSTONES. For those of you who are older and grew up on the show (I watched it regularly on Channel 32 here in Chicago back in the 80s), be assured – STONE AGE SMACKDOWN! is THE FLINTSTONES through and through. It’s classic, and that means some mild, yet occasionally-dated stereotypes here and there (one of the included bonus cartoons actually has Mr. Slate mentioning “beating” his son for not being good at baseball – so I’d avoid that one with the kids), as it stays true to it’s “Modern Stone Age” roots – THE HONEYMOONERS in the dinosaur days.
As with the guest stars in the days of old, each of the WWE Superstars and Divas that appear get their name altered to include a stone age pun. Well, all except for THE UNDERTAKER… who is simply, “THE UNDERTAKER.” We have JOHN CENASTONE (John Cena), MARBLE HENRY (Mark Henry), THE BOULDER TWINS (Nikki and Brie Bella aka The Bella Twins), DANIEL BRYROCK (Daniel Bryan), WWE chief Vince McMahon as VINCE McMAGMA, and recently-released from the WWE roster Rey Mysterio as REY MYSTERIOPAL, with CM Punk in his final WWE turn as CM PUNKROCK.
The basic gist is that Fred Flintstone screws-up big time (he has a habit for that), and manages to lose his family’s vacation money, and that leads him to another “hair-brain scheme.” Said scheme leads to the creation of the first-ever “Sports Entertainment” Spectacle, and the launch of the FFE: Fred Flintstone Entertainment. There’s a lot of wink-wink nods for the grownups and WWE fans in the bunch, and of course the whole thing wraps-up with a feel-good ending as you’d expect. Overall, a lot of fun and recommended viewing… but Barney Rubble’s voice is jarringly-wrong for an old-schooler like me… though kids probably won’t notice.
