Despite my love of the TRANSFORMERS, there are some characters who are so obscure that their existence within the Transformers lore has escaped me. From the Generation 1-era comes Liokaiser – a Combiner who first appeared in the Japanese cartoon series, but eventually made its way into later iterations of the franchise. What this robot didn’t have until now is a proper, U.S.-release as a toy, but Hasbro has taken care of that with this month’s official release of the Transformers Generations Platinum Edition Combiner Wars Liokaiser – an Entertainment Earth Exclusive, and a featured pick in my 2016 Holiday Wish Guide here on THE ROCK FATHER™ Magazine. This beautiful Boxed Set includes 6 evil Decepticons who merge into the mighty Liokaiser in order to throw down against the Autobots! My allies at EE sent an early sample to Rock Father HQ for review, and I’m giving you one of the first official in-hand looks at this great set…
Included in this set are The Destrons – described as “a foul group of criminals and convicts that also happens to be one of the most elite strike teams in the galaxy.” Aligned with the Decepticons, the six-member team includes:
- Voyager Class Dezarus: A dragon-like beast that becomes a space shuttle-type craft, this figure forms the torso of the Liokaiser.
- Deluxe Class Guyhawk: A pink military jet/robot that forms the right arm of Liokaiser.
- Deluxe Class Fellbat: A blue military jet/robot that forms the left arm of Liokaiser.
- Deluxe Class Drillhorn: A blue tank/robot that forms the left leg of Liokaiser.
- Deluxe Class Ironbison: A gold tank/robot that forms the right leg of Liokaiser.
- Legends Class Ion Scythe: Winged bird that becomes a handheld weapon for the Liokaiser.
At times I’ve been critical of the transformation difficulty of certain modern Transformers, but most of the Combiners Wars figures have been pretty good (and they’re mix-and-match to build new Combiners!), and Liokaiser is no exception. Each figure transforms with relative ease, fitting right into the recommended Ages 8 and Up range (or five times that, like yours truly). The interlocking system means that the pieces fit well while in combined mode, and the articulation is just right to get some fun action poses out of the deal. Standing 12″ tall, this isn’t as big as say, Devastator, but it feels a lot more sturdy.
Packed in a reusable box an inner tray, this set also includes an envelope that houses a full-color poster, collector’s card, and the instructions for assembly.
Want to bring Liokaiser home or give him as a gift? While the regular price is $129.99, for a limited time beginning 11/11/16, you can get $20 off, free shipping, and a free G1 Transformers diorama with your purchase. The coupon code SINGLES must be used at checkout! Order here.
