Last year, Disney•Pixar’s TOY STORY OF TERROR! found Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie and a whole bunch of familiar friends from the TOY STORY movies in a new and precarious situation when it made it’s debut on ABC. This year, TOY STORY OF TERROR! slides into 31 Days of Halloween here on THE ROCK FATHER, thanks to a fantastic home release on Blu-Ray + Digital HD Combo Pack (and standalone DVD), making this modern Halloween tradition available year-round.
The beauty of the TOY STORY films has always been playing on the emotion of human beings and their plastic counterparts, and TOY STORY OF TERROR! takes that to new levels, wisely tapping into fear not just of the toys – but of their owner… the fear of being lost forever.
It’s that separation anxiety that kicks-in when the Toy Story gang gets lost in a roadside motel, but instead of Norman Bates doing the PSYCHO dirty work of “mother,” we have an unscrupulous toy scalper at work (the motel manager) – one that will literally steal toys from children to make a quick buck on an eBay-like auction site. It’s one thing to horde toys from the store, raising prices on the secondary market for the hot holiday stuff (that season is coming), but to have a trained lizard start swiping toys from the motel rooms of unsuspecting travelers? Game over, man.
There’s performances here that are on-par with the theatrical TOY STORY counterparts, and Carl Weathers is fantastic as the G.I. JOE-inspired Combat Carl.
Highly-recommended and Rock Father-Approved!
TOY OF TERROR! features the voice talents of original TOY STORY cast members Tom Hanks as “Woody,” Tim Allen as “Buzz Lightyear,” Joan Cusack as “Jessie,” Timothy Dalton as “Mr. Pricklepants,” Don Rickles as “Mr. Potato Head,” Kristen Schaal as “Trixie” and Wallace Shawn as “Rex,” along with series newcomer Carl Weathers as “Combat Carl/Combat Carl Jr.
