Since becoming parents for the first time 6½ years ago, my wife and I have spent a lot of time indulging our little girls’ interest in cars. Actually, vehicles in general are a big thing – and the faster, the better! When it comes to fast vehicles with a ton of flair, Hot Wheels has that market on lock, and it was Addie’s playtime that first rekindled my own love for those little 1:64-scale diecast rides a few years back. Now, little sister Finley is in on the action as well, and with the girls now 3 and 6, it’s interesting to see two distinct types of play taking place. Finn likes speed, imagination and adventure – while Addie has shifted into the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) elements of track construction and building unique structures with the pieces we have available. Over the years, we’ve discovered that our girls are hardly alone in their love of Hot Wheels – and some gigs of my own have led us to today… when it all comes full circle with something very special we’ve put together with my friends at The Step2 Company and Mattel. During my last visit to The Step2 Company’s headquarters in Streetsboro, Ohio (I’ve been a paid Brand Ambassador for a few years), I got a sneak-preview of their latest collaboration with Mattel – the race car bed that every kid (including grownup ones) have always wanted… an official Hot Wheels edition. I dropped the first-look at the Hot Wheels Toddler-to-Twin Race Car Bed right here on the site back in July, and news spread quickly. Offered in iconic Hot Wheels Orange & Blue standard edition, the bed was also issued in a sweet Red version as a Walmart Exclusive. Knowing very well that my girls would love one of these, Finn became the obvious choice since she was ready to move into a “Big Kid” bed from the toddler conversion of her crib. Thing is, neither available version of the Hot Wheels bed would’ve been a color match for her bedroom… and that’s where The Rock Daughter Edition began to take shape.
My friends at Step2 and Mattel invited my 3½-year-old daughter to collaborate with them on its design. We did a Skype Call with Finley going face-to-face with members of the Step2 team in Ohio, and the Mattel team in Southern California.
Using inspiration from the color pallette present in her room, Finley’s version of the Hot Wheels bed would be a sleek ride molded in yellow and purple – accented with a pink rear spoiler. All of the thoughtful design of the production version would stay intact, from the working LED headlights (that double as nightlights with a 15-minute auto shutoff feature), to the molded-in tracks along three sides of the bed. The spoiler allows for storage and display of several Hot Wheels vehicles (including her “Winning Race Car” – a Hot Wheels Racing model that she’s just been obsessed with for ages and calls “my Winning Race Car”), as do the Air Intakes on the each side of the bed. At the end of each track run, connectors allow for the addition of additional Hot Wheels tracksets – taking the race to endless locales fueled by imagination!
Two of the beds were produced, and one of them could be headed for you… but that’s certainly not all: We’re going to get some little girl hooked-up with a fantastic collection to start (or continue) their Hot Wheels adventure!
