Nostalgia is a serious thing right now, and when it’s done right, the way to move forward into the future is by providing a link to the past. From 20th Century Fox, the PREDATOR franchise is being rebooted, and in this first trailer audiences are getting a look at a very different movie than the ones that have preceded it. THE PREDATOR finds a suburban boy unknowingly luring the intergalactic hunters back to earth in a scene that takes me right back to a simpler time – a realm of imagination and wonder much like that seen in films like the Goonies or Monster Squad. The latter was a 1987 collaboration between Shane Black and Fred Dekker, and for THE PREDATOR they’re working together again, co-writing the screenplay and with Black (Lethal Weapon) at the helm. Take a look…
From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a young boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.
THE PREDATOR stars Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Sterling K. Brown, Alfie Allen, Thomas Jane, Augusto Aguilera, Jake Busey and Yvonne Strahovski. See it in theaters on September 14, 2018.
Sidenote: Being a huge fan of MONSTER SQUAD, I once included a nod to the film in the Death Walks the Streets comic books that I wrote alongside Ben Brezinski. Back in 2014, one page caught Fred Dekker’s attention… and really made my day:
