So here’s something cool I recently stumbled across. There’s this band called CONFESS that crossed my path completely by accident about a week ago, and I was “all in” faster than that dude on Bar Rescue a few seasons back.
It was one of the band’s older records that first grabbed my ears, but lo and behold, they were only days away from dropping a brand-new album on our heads. Metalmorphosis is now upon us via Frontiers Music, and believe you me, this thing is a good one.
The first tune that had me bippin’ and boppin’ was “Wicked Temptations,” sounding like the glory days of melodic rock had come roaring back to life. John Elliot’s vocals are absolutely perfect for this type of material, and consequently, this one became my favorite right out of the gate.
The title track “Metalmorphosis” storms in with the axe attack of Ludwig Nordlander and Asser Hakala, urging you to bury the needle the second the light turns green. Meanwhile, Samuel Samael (drums) and Lucky (bass) motor along like pace cars in Death Race 2000.
Things take a slightly softer turn with “Beat of My Heart” before “Pursuit of the Jenny Haniver” throws us right back into the red. Seriously, if this song doesn’t make you wanna floor it, you might already be dead inside. Another winner for sure.
“The Other Side” combines the best elements of yesterday and today, and if this one doesn’t become a future single, then I clearly don’t know my business. Hell yeah, this track rules.
“Running to My Death” is another interesting one because the intro heads in one direction before the full band kicks the doors open and leaves the doubters behind.
The one-two combo of “Plague of Steel” and closer “Silvermalen” are polar opposites stylistically, yet both fit comfortably within the framework of the album.
All told, Metalmorphosis is a terrific release from a band I’m very happy to have discovered. CONFESS, you’ve officially got a new fan in me.
