Earlier this month, I attended a media event at DreamWorks Animation in Glendale, California, during which I was able to get a very early look at some as-of-then-unannounced new series. One such title that was not included in the 2018 sneak-preview is a big one, and one that caught a lot of folks off-guard when the official announcement arrived today. She-Ra: Princess of Power is coming back, and she’ll be toplining a new original series that’s headed to Netflix!
Here’s what DreamWorks had to say about She-Ra in a statement…
“From Eisner Award-winning author and executive producer Noelle Stevenson (Lumberjanes, Nimona) comes a modern take on the ‘80s girl power icon for a new generation of young fans. The trailblazing property originally debuted in 1985 to satisfy overwhelming demand for a female lead fantasy series. With Stevenson’s unique voice at the helm, fans are in store for an epic and timely tale that celebrates female friendship and empowerment, lead by a warrior princess tailor made for today.”
She-Ra was famously spun-off of the massive success of He-Man and The Masters of the Universe, paired with an animated series from Filmation plus a full toy line from Mattel. In recent years, Masters of the Universe has seen a resurgence, and the occasional piece of She-Ra merchandise has been released, albeit geared toward a collector market. With other female-led properties like Mysticons, DC Super Hero Girls, IAmElemental and Star Wars Forces of Destiny doing so well, here’s hoping that She-Ra is a smash, and that she’ll bring the Evil Horde with her, and maybe even her twin brother… He-Man!
Stay tuned for more, but in the meantime get a refresher on the original series. Season one is streaming now on Netflix.
