It’s been a big summer for Ford: not only did the company reach its emissions goal eight years early in June, it also partnered with Baidu, a Chinese internet company, in order to make your smart car even smarter.
In Ford Motor Company’s annual sustainability report, the company revealed that it has hit its lowered emissions goal eight years earlier than expected. Set in 2010, the automotive supplier wanted to reduce its emissions by 30% by 2025. This goal was reached last month when Ford revealed they have lowered CO2 emissions by 3.4 million metric tons.
Ford was reportedly able to achieve this goal through its use of LED lighting, improvements on paint and process, consolidating their operation plants, and utilizing sustainability initiatives in their facilities. It’s no surprise that Ford has been ranked the number one car brand in America.
Bruce Hettle, the vice president of Ford, is proud of their efforts.
“We are proud of the work we have done to achieve this goal We’ve made several improvements to our manufacturing operations — from the lighting we use to plant consolidations — all of which played a role in dramatically reducing our CO2 footprint,” he said.
Ford has also aimed to improve the smart functions available in upcoming models. By partnering with the Chinese internet search company, Baidu Inc., they hope to implement artificial intelligence with smart connections as they develop new cars.
Ford cars developed with the help of Baidu will utilize DuerOS technology, a type of voice-interaction tech designed by Baidu.
Peter Fleet, the president of the Ford Asia Pacific company is optimistic.
“As part of our ‘In China, For China’ strategy, we look forward to working closely to offer smart products and solutions that can make people’s lives easier and more enjoyable,” he said.
Although the financial terms of the agreement have not been reported as of June 27, the company hopes to offer users a new way to interact with their car. Through DuerOS technology, Ford hopes that drivers can use casual, natural language to access information and services while they drive.
It’s yet to be seen if the financial information regarding the deal will be disclosed, or if the technology will eventually make its way to America.
