The Force is Strong in my family. I have it… my wife has it… our daughters have it. Do you have that power, too? With the December 18th release of J.J. Abrams’ STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS fast-approaching in the heart of the Holiday Season, there’s an impressive fleet of new toys and games from Hasbro hitting the streets – many of which I’ve been covering here on THE ROCK FATHER Magazine since they began rolling out on “Force Friday” back in September. Family Game Night is certainly an important tradition for many, and The Force can be with it in a trio of new games that have landed firmly here in my 2015 Holiday Wish Guide – the STAR WARS LOOPIN’ CHEWIE GAME, CATCH PHRASE: STAR WARS Edition, and the BOP IT! STAR WARS R2-D2 Edition!
Raising two young girls to follow the path to The Dark Side of the Jedi has been an incredible thing – Teaching The Force The Rock Father™ Way since 2009 – sharing with them the Original Trilogy and exploring new adventures through STAR WARS REBELS ahead of THE FORCE AWAKENS. Those timeless stories bring generations together – just like game night, where there’s something for all ages. The big hit here – Loopin’ Chewie, where the family can send the mighty Wookiee Chewbacca flying as he’s “loopin'” around in the Millennium Falcon – trying to take out Imperial Stormtroopers around every turn.
When it comes to Bop It!, we’ve have countless variations over the years, but packing a new version into the shell of the Galaxy’s most famous Astromech Droid is pretty inspired – especially since it’s newly-recorded voice work by Anthony Daniels as C-3PO that leads the action. Bop it… twist it… pull it. It’s actually a great game for kids to learn about listening to instructions. Gets some laughter, too!
For the older kids (or grownups), STAR WARS Catch Phrase is a challenging new spin on the classic charades-style electronic game. With two levels of difficulty – Apprentice or Jedi Master – the words and phrases can actually be quite difficult, making it more of a game for my wife and I to enjoy – and she’s a much better “question-asker” than I. It’s a lot of fun.
As families prepare for STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, getting the game closet fully-stocked with fresh titles from A Galaxy Far, Far Away can be a helpful tool in passing The Force to a whole new generation.
