Holiday Wish Guide: Lincoln Logs – The Original STEM Toy…

Published:

This article is more than 7 years old and may not have been updated since our last site redesign. It may contain outdated information or could be missing images.

With so many new toys vying for the attention of kids and parents each and every year, it’s always interesting to take note of some true classics that have been able to stand the test of time.  100 years ago, John Lloyd Wright (son of noted architect Frank Lloyd Wright) created what would eventually be known as Lincoln Logs – a toy that I had as a child, and one that The Rock Daughters™ play with now. In fact, I still have my Lincoln Logs from the 70s, and that was the door-opener for what I’d call “The Original STEM Toy.” Officially, K’NEX (current maker of Lincoln Logs) calls them “America’s National Toy,” and that’s cool, too – especially since they’re once again MADE IN THE USA, and for 2016 they’ve secured a spot in my annual Holiday Wish Guide™ here on THE ROCK FATHER™ Magazine

Lincoln Logs

The Rock Daughters™ play with my old Lincoln Logs and their new ones.

The Original Lincoln Logs 100th Anniversary Tin: This 111-piece, all-wood building set contains all the pieces that kids need to complete a build inspired by one of the originals – the “Meeting House.” Beyond that, the beauty of Lincoln Logs is that the possibilities are endless. Kids will be building, knocking down and rebuilding their own creations as they engage in hours of free-flowing creative play.

Preparing to build...

I first came across this set at The Toy Insider’s Sweet Suite event in NYC over the summer, making it an early pick for inclusion in this year’s Wish Guide.

Bonus: The bucket makes a great hat/helmet. Seriously, I would’ve been doing the Buckethead thing as well.

Buckethead?

The Original Lincoln Logs Forge Mill Cabin: This 51-piece set is a great addition for any Lincoln Log village, complete with Made in the USA wooden logs, along with some plastic roofing and a cowboy. Kids can build what’s on the box, or mix these pieces with their existing collection to keep the building possibilities growing.
