From the legendary 787B race car to generations of MX-5s, green has long been part of Mazda‘s story. Now, a fresh shade is ready to write its next chapter.
Some colors become synonymous with a brand. For Mazda, green is one of them.
Long before the latest crossover craze and well before the current MX-5 Miata became the world’s best-selling roadster, Mazda was making a statement with shades of green. The iconic orange-and-green Mazda 787B, which conquered the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1991, remains one of the most recognizable race cars ever built. Previous generations of the MX-5 Miata also wore various shades of green, earning plenty of fans along the way.
Now, that tradition continues.
Mazda recently pulled the covers off Zinc Green, a new paint color that made its global debut at the Karuizawa Fan Meeting in Japan on May 31. The annual gathering is one of the largest celebrations of MX-5 Miata culture worldwide, making it a fitting place to introduce the latest addition to the roadster’s palette.
Unlike some flashy colors that demand attention from every angle, Zinc Green changes its personality with the light. Under bright sunshine, the finish delivers rich, vibrant tones with noticeable depth and contrast. As daylight fades, the color takes on a more subdued appearance, with subtle gray undertones and an almost matte-like character.
Mazda describes Zinc Green as a lifestyle-focused color, similar to Polymetal Gray Metallic, designed to complement a variety of vehicles. Still, it feels especially at home on the MX-5 Miata, a car that has always celebrated individuality as much as driving enjoyment.
Mazda says Zinc Green will eventually expand beyond the roadster and into other areas of its lineup, including crossover SUVs. U.S. availability details are expected later this year.
