Released last year through Fisher-Price Music, THE MERRY GOES ‘ROUND is the second full-length set of kids music from singer/songwriter JEWEL. Touted as an album ”fondly made to be enjoyed by adults and children alike,” Jewel offers up a 16-track assortment of original songs and old favorites that find the songstress expanding upon her signature folk-pop stylings with a heavy dash of Southern flavor.
Album opener Sammy the Spider has already become the album’s calling card, a whimsical tale of an eight-legged adventurer making the trek from bathroom to kitchen. Supermarket Song is a fun run through the weekly shopping list with a New Orleans-style twist, while Bucky the Bull undoubtedly borrows inspiration from the adventures of Jewel’s husband – rodeo pro, Ty Murray.

There’s a lot of country here, and there’s also some songs ripe for holiday playlists, with Only Shadows great for Halloween and My Favorite Things instantly conjuring the spirit of Christmas.

What’s particularly interesting is that the album becomes more Jewel-eque as it progresses, something that should no doubt please the adult listener, though kids may have a hard time getting through the full hour of music in one sitting. Experiencing music with my own toddler, I find that the 30-minute mark is usually spot-on for optimum enjoyment.
