Review: MEGA BLOKS Call of Duty Collectors Sets…

This article is more than 10 years old and may not have been updated since our last site redesign. It may contain outdated information or could be missing images.

If you follow me on networks like Instagram and Twitter (and like Wooderson said, “it would be cooler if you did”), then you probably already know that I’m digging MEGA BLOKS’ Collectors Series Line of CALL OF DUTY building sets. Unlike most of the other MEGA BLOKS products that I often cover here on The Rock Father, these are geared toward “older” kids… like me. Technically, the CALL OF DUTY collection is recommended for ages 10+, but I’m filing them as sets “For Grownups,” and having built three of them already: Mountain Recon; Drone Attack; and Chopper Strike (all sent to me for review) – I’m already looking forward to doing more.

While the pictures might be a bit deceiving in terms of scale, these sets are, indeed miniature, shockingly detailed for their size with heavily-articulated figures. In building these sets, I concluded that my overall attraction to the CALL OF DUTY franchise (I’m playing CALL OF DUTY: GHOSTS on XBOX 360 right now) is because it reminds me so much of the G.I. JOE figures and vehicles that I had in the 1980s. The first MEGA BLOKS set I built was the Mountain Recon Snowmobile, and I’d be lying if I didn’t admit flashing back to my 1983 G.I. JOE Polar Battle Bear “Skimobile,” which Snow Job rode regularly around my childhood home.

Oh yes... it's awesome.

As an adult, I just want to re-enact the Snowmobile Chase Scene from DIE HARD 2: DIE HARDER… with MEGA BLOKS, and that’s something which I’ve probably done after the girls have been tucked into bed on more than one occasion. It looks something like this, but with toys:

But I digress, and the Drone Attack set feels pretty appropriate for 2014.

But the highlight of my build here at Rock Father HQ for this round was the Chopper Strike – an impressive helicopter, complete with a pilot and soldier, plenty of accessories, and a tow line – perfect for hauling a hero (or villain) or their cargo to safety.

Based on my experience as a big kid (and COD player), the CALL OF DUTY Collectors Sets by MEGA BLOKS come highly recommended for grownups looking for some fun, and a little bit of “me” time. Building sets seem to have a relaxing, calming effect for me, and I think you might dig them, too.
