THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 swung into theaters this weekend, scoring some BIG box office receipts, with over $92M in the United States, and a $116M haul Internationally – not bad for the second “Amazing” big-screen incarnation of the titular web-slinger. While I haven’t seen the film yet, we have checked out a couple of the toys from Hasbro’s latest MARVEL-based offerings. Yes, the toy aisles are once again loaded with new Spider-goodies, and here’s a quick look at a pair of items sent to us for review, along with a rundown of what else Hasbro has in-store…
MARVEL SPIDER-MAN LEGENDS INFINITE SERIES Action Figures
Recommended for Ages 4 and Up, these figures are fantastic. Hasbro sent us the comic-based SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN, taken from a story in which Doc Ock took over Spidey’s body and thus deemed himself “superior.” Not familiar with the story, I was more interested in the figure itself, nicely detailed and impressively articulated. While my girls may not appreciate it in full just yet, the poseability makes for some fun, and Spidey has been hanging out in my office, and fighting some backyard foes.
Also included in this assortment are the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (movie-based), MARVEL’S ELECTRO (movie-based), CARNAGE (comic-based), BEETLE (comic-based) and BLACK CAT (comic-based) Kids and grownups can collect all six figures to build the ULTIMATE GREEN GOBLIN Build-A-Figure (comic-based), while three swap figures appear in the assortment. The Build-A-Figure gimmick has been done in the past, but unfortunately, a couple figures from this assortment have already become the object of scalpers and unscrupulous folks, thus ending up with jacked prices on the secondary market. Finishing off that Green Goblin may be a tough challenge.
THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 SPIDER VISION Electronic Mask
Role Play is a big category, and kids just love to dress up and take on the role of their favorite heroes and villains. The SPIDER VISION Electronic Mask lets kids pretend to have SPIDER-MAN’S SPIDEY SENSE, and spot villains using the Mircoprism FIRE VISION technology. The mask comes with two discs that illuminate once activated by the SPIDER VISION Mask, a cool idea – but it sounds better on paper. Even without the Spidey Sense, the mask is fun and the electronics feel unnecessary. Hasbro sent us one of these, and I tend to think it would be more fun for the kids with some of the add-ons, like various web shooters/blasters/slingers available.
Sidebar: We have the Super Solider Gear “Recon Rangefinder” from CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLIDER, and my little ones (Addie, in particular) have been using it (a dual binocular/disc-blaster kinda thing) along with the Spidey gear.
