I’m an original STAR WARS fan. My relationship with George Lucas’ saga dates back to my earliest days, fueling my childhood and helping to shape me into adulthood. I’ve worked on a movie about STAR WARS… recorded a song about STAR WARS… and at one point, had an entire room full of STAR WARS toys. I wish I’d never sold them, as I’m now a parent, and the next generation of STAR WARS fans is here. While many feared that the prequel trilogy would be STAR WARS for future audiences, the franchise is officially back on-track under the ownership of Disney, and while old folks like me eagerly await the 2015 release of J.J. Abrams’ STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, the newly-launched STAR WARS REBELS proves that our beloved saga is in good hands. After seeing an early screening of STAR WARS REBELS: SPARK OF REBELLION ahead of it’s recent Disney Channel Premiere, I’m confident that this is my daughter’s STAR WARS. And now, we’ve got it on DVD thanks to an Exclusive early release at Walmart.
By the time we left the theatre last week from our sneak-preview screening (where Addie made a new friend – a little Jedi boy), the girls were already asking when we could see it again. While SPARK OF REBELLION marked the STAR WARS REBELS debut on Disney Channel, the series moves to Disney XD later this month (10/13). With Addie at school the other day, Little Finn and I stopped by Walmart to snag the DVD and a few other goodies to accent the girls’ fledgling REBELS toy collection (we had a few figures already).
We checked out the new offerings from Hasbro including the Inquisitor Lightsaber, STAR WARS COMMAND Star Destroyer, and looked for the Heroes Collection Millenium Falcon (available for pre-order). Ultimately, Finn grabbed a C-3PO & R2-D2 Dog Tag, and we ended up grabbing the massive Heroes Collection X-Wing Fighter.
Back at home, Addie was already excited as she went to school knowing that Finn and I were making a store run, and she was decked-out in some appropriate gear for the day. Moments later, she was racing around the house flying our new X-Wing, just before the kids and I sat down to enjoy SPARK OF REBELLION once more, this time over lunch.
I still have a few items left over from when I had my huge collection, and from what I’ve seen this week, they’ll be getting some play here very soon. Funny enough, the girls are already asking me for figures of Sabine Wren and Hera Syndulla – the two female leads of STAR WARS REBELS, but I don’t think those figures are out yet. They also want Chopper, the feisty little cousin of R2-D2. In the meantime, we built the Free 3D Papercraft model of the REBELS ship (The Ghost) and let Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger have some adventures…

Like father, like daughters? Perhaps STAR WARS is a genetic thing… as Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi wisely said, “Trust in The Force…”
