After acquiring MEGA BLOKS last year following a previous partnership that found iconic Mattel properties such as Barbie and Hot Wheels making their way into block form, Mattel has announced some major moves to expand their construction sets by bringing some major licenses into the world of MEGA BLOKS. From Mattel’s own portfolio comes the long-rumored new collection of MONSTER HIGH Building Sets that find the ghoulish guys and gals taking play into a whole different realm. MEGA BLOKS will also issue new sets under their Power Rangers line, with collections based on Saban’s POWER RANGERS DINO CHARGE, which just debuted on Nickelodeon this month. While those are cool, the biggest news may be a pair of licenses that they’ve snagged from others in the growing brick segment…

Nickelodeon and Mattel have announced the MEGA BLOKS TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES Construction line for 2016, a surprising move given that TMNT building sets have been produced under segment-dominating LEGO Group for the past few years. Here’s what they have to say about the new collection:

“Drawing inspiration from the vast Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, the Mega Bloks product line will offer creative building experiences for fans of all ages. Readers of the original comic book series and millennials who followed the 1990’s TV shows will love the authentic collectibles. Kids will be able to build & collect the exciting TMNT world, with awesome action-packed building sets, vehicles and a range of buildable micro action figures drawn from Nickelodeon’s top rated TV show and movies. Even parents will be able to introduce Turtles to their littlest ninjas through junior building sets, as the popularity for the franchise continues to grow across age groups.”

Additionally, MEGA BLOKS STAR TREK Collector’s Sets will debut in 2016, part of an agreement with CBS Consumer Products. Some readers may recall that STAR TREK building sets were previously produced under license to Hasbro for their KRE-O collection back in 2013, some of which we reviewed right here on THE ROCK FATHER (including the Enterprise).

And finally, a collection of TERMINATOR GENYSIS Collector’s Sets will hit stores later this year in association with the Paramount Pictures’ release of the latest incarnation of the long-running action franchise.

Pretty big year for MEGA BLOKS, and a good one for kids and collectors, right? Stay tuned for more on these lines shortly…
