Netflix #StreamTeamI always say that it’s a sorta odd thing that we only have one true Netflix profile, despite the availability of Netflix Kids, and the fact that I, as a card-carrying writer in the Netflix #StreamTeam, should certainly have one of my own. Bottom line is that the Netflix AI (artificial intelligence) tends to think that “James” wishes to watch a completely bipolar assortment of family programming… or highlight inappropriate for kids stuff. Fact is, The Rock Daughters still dominate our Netflix profile, and the time has come once more to throw down a few choice picks for mid-October (for kids and grownups alike). Let’s go traveling down the rabbit hole and off broadway, cool?

MONSTER HIGH: BOO YORK, BOO YORK – It’s taken a bit to fully take hold, but the Monster High bug has bitten the girls like a whimsical vampire aching for adventure. The first full-fledged musical to feature Mattel’s ghoulish girls (and beastly boys), BOO YORK, BOO YORK is colorful fun with Cleo de Nile and friends at the center of the action.

EVER AFTER HIGH: WAY TOO WONDERLAND The more colorful cousins to the the “Monster” crowd, this other Mattel property continues to grow as a Netflix Original Series. This time around, it’s an Alice in Wonderland theme, and the latest four-episode season is must-watch entertainment with classic fairytale storytelling. One thing that’s really impressed me about EVER AFTER HIGH is how detailed and beautiful the actual dolls are. Their costumes are really impressive, and a lot of that carries over into the series, which my girls certainly love.

Bonus: A Netflix Mystery Box arrived here at Rock Father HQ  containing an EVER AFTER HIGH Mystery Bag. We did a live unboxing via Periscope, which has since been captured and uploaded to YouTube. (Please Note: Since this was captured from a Periscope stream, it’s low-res).

THE MUNSTERS: I really don’t know how long THE MUNSTERS has been on Netflix, but this 60s series has been lurking in the depths of the catalog for what seems like a very long time. I hadn’t shown it to the girls, but in the Halloween spirit, we’ve seen a few episodes. The little ones think it’s hilarious (would there be a MONSTER HIGH, if not for THE MUNSTERS paving the way?), but my wife is not a fan – never has been. This is a National treasure right here, and you owe it to yourself to sit down with Herman, Lily, Grandpa and the gang!

THE WALKING DEAD (not for kids): I’m in the minority here, but TWD lost me in the sure-fire, tried-and-true way that so many other series’ have – they took a mid-season break from November to February during Season Two, and I never came back. I’m just terrible about mid-season breaks and returning to a series (RIP, REVOLUTION), and that’s where Netflix is always such a win for me – content available when it’s convenient for me. I’ve just started creeping back into AMC’s THE WALKING DEAD, picking up where I left off around the mid-way part of Season Two. It’s such a Halloween-y show to begin with, but it was the recent spinoff, FEAR THE WALKING DEAD that made me fire up the Netflix to go back to the source material (not counting the comics, of course).
