One of those bands that defies the rules of typical classification, Ozomatli has long bent genres with their funky blend of rock, hip-hop, and latin grooves. Chances are, even if you don’t know Ozomatli, you’ve likely still heard Ozomatli and bumped along to their soundtrack-staple, “Saturday Night” on occasion. Still not sure? Check this and come back. Sound familiar? Now, Ozomatli has entered the kindie realm with the release of Ozomatli Presents OzoKidz.
Released earlier this Fall, OzoKidz feels more like a Summer record, with it’s colorful sonic imagery and positive vibes. In fact, with the inclusion of a song called “Skateboard,” it reminds me of playing the Tony Hawk Pro Skater games back in my pre-parenting days, which coincidentally, had Ozomatli on the soundtrack.

The beats are BIG on OzoKidz, and my 3-year-old certainly appreciates that. Indeed, OzoKidz is undoubtedly Rock Daughter-approved as she shakes and gyrates while dancing to songs like “Moose on the Loose” and “Like It’s Your Birthday” while doing this cute little hand gesture with her thumbs.
While it’s great if I like the music, the kids are the true test of whether a release aimed at the youngsters sinks or swims. If they like it, you’re golden. If Daddy and Mommy can groove to it as well? Then it’s over-the-top.
Ozomatli presents OzoKidz is available now on iTunes.
