With ARCHITECTS OF GUILT, their second album for Solid State Records (out Feb 15, 2001), Texas-based THE FAMINE have created a prime example of how not to make an album, delivering a reminder that technical playing does not equal good songwriting.
In what plays like a 40-minute collection of B-sides scraped together from the countless, faceless “metalcore” bands you’ve seen play festivals but whose names you can’t remember, THE FAMINE avoids writing a single memorable song with a signature sound. Unfortunate, because these guys are good players.
Aside from “To the Teeth,” which is ironically, the final track on the album, there’s nothing to love here. Unless you dig pieces of songs held together with Scotch tape and Elmer’s glue. If that’s your bag, then this dud’s for you.
