Review: Deck the Home A CHRISTMAS STORY Outdoor Laser Light Projector

This article is more than 7 years old and may not have been updated since our last site redesign. It may contain outdated information or could be missing images.

Updated to “Do Not Buy” Status: Our projector has malfunctioned after just three weeks of normal use. While we are awaiting a resolution (if any), in the interest of sharing my true experience, I feel it necessary to update this review. First the motion function failed, and three days later the projector was completely dead. As of this writing (12/11/2016), the projectors had been marked-down on the Deck the Home site from $129 to $79, and as low as $59 on Amazon. We are not alone, as “1-Star Reviews” are stacking up on Amazon.

Every few years there’s a “revolution,” or more accurately – a super-hot trend when it comes to holiday lighting that everyone wants to get in on. Back in the late 90s, I was working “Big Box” retail when icicle lights first came out, and I remember the frenzy those first two years in which everyone just had to be like the neighbors. Right now the trend is laser light shows, and this is one I’ve been waiting for the right chance to get on-board with – an easy way to cover a lot of area at once, while finally reaching those high-up spots that I’m too cautious to mess with (pre-kids, I would’ve climbed all over the place). So while the neighbors may all have starfields of red and green, the folks at Deck the Home have upped the game, presenting the first-ever licensed Laser Light Projector, and they couldn’t have picked a more perfect property to do: A CHRISTMAS STORY

Deck the Home A Christmas Story Laser Light Projector Review

Sent to us for review at Rock Father HQ, the A Christmas Story Laser Light Projector features 1,000 points of red and green “star-showering” light, but also seven licensed images from the film that are illuminated in green and have motion.

Among the images are the infamous leg lamp; the iconic “fragile” crate; Ralphie in the bunny suit; Ralphie as a Cowboy; the Red Ryder BB Gun; the flag pole “triple dog dare” disaster; Ralphie’s cracked glasses; and the ominous warning… “You’ll shoot your eye out!”

For a quick and easy lighting solution, you can simply use the projector on its own to cover 5,000 square feet (it also operates in temps as low as -15°), but since I’m always torn between the traditional and the cutting-edge, our finished display here at Rock Father HQ pairs the projector with some cool white LED lights. What I really want to do now is get a couple of the standard red/green showering light projectors to do our two big trees in the front. I tested it with this one and it looks fantastic.

This unit also comes with a remote control which can operate simple functions like on/off, but also the motion control. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of the additional functions as I think the amount of motion is perfect right out of the box.
