Brewing History: North Coast’s Acme Beer Resurrects Pre-Prohibition Flavors

Published:

Raise your glasses, beer aficionados! North Coast Brewing Company (NCBC) is ushering in the spring season with the much-anticipated return of Acme Beer, a timeless classic that’s sure to delight palates.

NCBC joyfully reintroduces this crisp, delicious, and refreshing lager, capturing the essence of a pre-prohibition favorite. Originally brewed by San Francisco’s Acme Breweries in the early 20th century, Acme Beer pays homage to its roots as a light, pilsner-style brew, echoing the universal style of North American breweries of its time.

Dedicated to preserving California’s brewing legacy, NCBC founders Mark Ruedrich and Tom Allen acquired trademark rights to the iconic Acme brand in 1995, ensuring its continued presence in the beer world. Now, with Brewmaster Chuck Martins at the helm, Acme Beer returns as a cold-fermented lager with a 4.4% ABV — perfect for easygoing “session drinking.”

“Acme Beer is fermented cold with a lager yeast strain,” Martins explains. “We selected this yeast strain to spotlight the bready, biscuity malt character. It is light-bodied, straw-colored, and firmly bittered for a dry, thirst-quenching palate.”

Beer enthusiasts can raise a toast to tradition with Acme Beer, now available to savor and celebrate the legacy of California’s brewing heritage.
