Get Ready to “Sweep the Leg” Again: KARATE KID Returns for “COBRA KAI”

This article is more than 7 years old and may not have been updated since our last site redesign. It may contain outdated information or could be missing images.

“Fear does not exist in this dojo.” – It’s been 33 years since Kreese (Martin Kove) lead the Cobra Kai, a group whose most famous battle found Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) facing off against Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) at the 1984 All Valley Karate Championship. While our first real hint as to what happened to these characters in the years since arrived a decade ago in No More Kings’ excellent “Sweep the Leg” music video, now we’ll have an official continuation of the KARATE KID saga in COBRA KAI, a new original series coming to YouTube Red in 2018. THR reports that the series landed at YouTube following bidding by Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and AMC – getting an immediate order of 10 episodes.

COBRA KAI is set 30 years after the events of the original film, and will follow a down-on-his-luck Johnny as he re-opens the Cobra Kai dojo and reignites his rivalry with a quite successful Daniel. Billed as a comedy, the half-hour series will be written by Josh Heald (Hot Tub Time Machine) with writing duo Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (Harold and Kumar). No word yet on if my youngest Rock Daughter™, a recent karate enthusiast and student, will be lined-up for a cameo.

“Sweep the leg, Johnny!”
