With Blue Sky Studios and 20th Century Fox releasing THE PEANUTS MOVIE on November 6, generations of fans both old and new are discovering the adventures of a boy named Charlie Brown. Those adventures with Snoopy, Linus and Lucy, Pig Pen, Peppermint Patty, Schroeder, The Little Red-Haired Girl and more are timeless, and I’m in the crowd that holds sincere hope that Steve Martino will have crafted a worthy companion when his film arrives in theaters. For THE PEANUTS MOVIE, it’s composer Christophe Beck (ANT-MAN, FROZEN) that has some big shoes to fill – those once occupied by the Vince Guaraldi Trio. It was Guaraldi’s music that became just as iconic as the creations of Charles M. Schulz, and for many (likely myself included), a first introduction to jazz. On July 31, Concord Music Group will release a new collection under the Fantasy label – PEANUTS GREATEST HITS. Featuring a dozen classic songs and all-new liner notes by Derrick Bang (author of the career-spanning book, VINCE GUARALDI AT THE PIANO), Concord Music Group and THE ROCK FATHER Magazine are pleased to give readers a chance at winning one of five (5) copies of the album on CD!
A little background: While the Peanuts comic strip appeared daily in newspapers across the world, Vince Guaraldi’s music helped bring the gang to wider audiences through his jazzy PEANUTS television and film soundtrack recordings. Charles M. Schulz created the world of Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus and Snoopy from his outpost in the Midwestern city of St. Paul, Minnesota. Meanwhile, westward in California, pianist Vince Guaraldi was helping put San Francisco on the jazz map through a series of early recordings with the likes of Cal Tjader, Woody Herman and Conte Candoli.
In early 1964, when Lee Mendelson began work on a television documentary about the world of PEANUTS, he heard Guaraldi’s GRAMMY® Award-winning instrumental hit “Cast Your Fate to the Wind” on the radio, while crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. Mendelson knew he’d found precisely the right musical foil for PEANUTS. Over the next decade, Guaraldi composed and performed scores for numerous PEANUTS TV specials — including the evergreen A Charlie Brown Christmas — along with a feature film, A Boy Named Charlie Brown.
