Review: Disney•Pixar CARS Piston Cup Collection (Mattel)

This article is more than 8 years old and may not have been updated since our last site redesign. It may contain outdated information or could be missing images.

It’s been pretty-much determined that it was Disney•Pixar’s CARS that inspired the love of vehicles that both of The Rock Daughters™ share with daddy here at Rock Father HQ.  It started with Addie fairly early into things, an interest that spread to little sister Finn – who just may be the more octane-inclined at this point. Regardless of who has the bigger “need for speed,” our daughters have a collection of Hot Wheels, Matchbox and CARS vehicles that has already eclipsed that of my own youth, and these girls are just 4 & 7. One common thread is that all of those brands are produced by Mattel, and something that came to us recently through Mattel’s Play, Rate & Review program is the Disney•Pixar CARS Piston Cup Collection – an 11-car box set of fan favorite vehicles from the famed Piston Cup Championship.

A complete starter collection right out of the box, or a great addition to an existing collection, kids will love bringing to life new races and adventures with Lightning McQueen, Strip Weathers (aka the King), Chick Hicks, Chuck Armstrong, Eugene Carbureski, Billy Oilchanger, James Cleanair, Claude Scruggs, Davey Apex, Haul Inngas and Aiken Axler. As with all of the CARS vehicles, the detail is impressive, and the quality is top-notch, with the characters looking as if they’d driven right off the screen. With the way they come packed in a flip-top box, this is also a nice set for the “adult collector” looking for a special new piece.

In Finley’s bedroom (which has her famous “Rock Daughter Edition” Hot Wheels Bed from Step2), there’s a little Hot Wheels dresser in which she keeps much of her collection of toy vehicles. On top of it, she often places her vehicles from CARS and PLANES, and I once found her sitting on the bed staring at them with a giggle. I asked her what was going on, and she pointed at the vehicles – each staring back at her with the “eyes” on their windshields. “I was trying to sleep,” she said, “but these CARS, they just crack me up!” She burst into laughter before making yet another attempt at racing into dreamland.

The Disney•Pixar CARS Piston Cup Collection is Rock Father-approved, and will be featured in my 2016 Holiday Wish Guide.
