Within the past couple of years, the “blind” toy craze has been picking up steam. From blind bags and blind boxes, to mystery eggs, surprise eggs and now capsules, there’s something for just about interest, and the latest toymaker to get in on the action is ZURU Toys. With licenses from Disney, the first ones to hit retail were the Disney FROZEN Capsules back in January, and the next batch that’s shipping now are based some heavy-hitters from MARVEL – Ultimate Spider-man and Avengers Assemble. This is the first time I’ve ever received a shipment of toys direct from the factory in China, so I actually had to go to FedEx to pick them up – their arrival being a complete mystery to me as well (I had no idea they were coming). What was inside? Let’s take a look at the MARVEL Capsules Assortment…
The MARVEL collection includes five figures, and while these might appear to be “mystery” capsules, they’re actually not, and I dig that immensely. Each of the five capsules looks the same except for a thin, colored stripe at the bottom of the label to indicate which character is inside. While some enthusiasts might scoff at the lack of “mystery,” as a parent I appreciate not having to buy several of the same toy in order to complete a collection.
In this set we find CAPTAIN AMERICA, SPIDER-MAN, THE INCREDIBLE HULK, IRON MAN, and THOR. For the fact that these are little 2″ figures, they’re pretty detailed and cool. Each figurine is non-articulated and comes attached to a non-removable base. What’s impressive with these is how good the paint applications are – they actually look really good. Having seen many figures that are larger and pricier with poorly slapped-on paint and decals, this is a fine example of how a toymaker can get it right. My wife commented that she was impressed with the bases these come attached to.
If tiny collectibles is your thing, I think you’ll be quite pleased with these, You can try to predict what the AGE OF ULTRON will be, or stage your own CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR by pitting Tony Stark and Steve Rogers against each other.
Rock Father-approved, recommended for ages 3+, not for children under 36-months due to small parts.
Stay Tuned: The folks at ZURU also have a collection of Disney PLANES: FIRE & RESCUE Capsules that are shipping now, and promise “Disney Friends” and Disney•Pixar assortments in the months ahead.
