When Disney•Pixar released CARS in 2006, I had no idea that I’d one day be a parent… much less be The Rock Father. Fast-forward seven years, and I’m not only raising two octane-obsessed daughters, but CARS has become a permanent part of the pop culture landscape. Now, with the recent release of the animated spin-off, Disney PLANES, the girls and I have started to create our own adventures high above the World of Cars, recently expanding our toy collection with some new characters from Mattel’s extensive line of CARS and PLANES vehicles. The area in and around Rock Father HQ is a big world to explore… and a fun one where the girls and I discovered Propwash Junction and staged our own Wings Across the World race.
No one will ever accuse me of not spoiling my girls, and our recent trip to Walmart (see photos and thoughts from our shop on my Google+ Page) is a prime example. “Is it someone’s birthday?” Nope, just a Wednesday afternoon… but you wouldn’t know it, with nine new additions to our garage and hanger. Fact is, I’d been keeping Addie at bay when it comes to PLANES. She’s been asking for little Dusty Crophopper since he first started showing up in stores earlier this summer, but I hadn’t caved in. CARS has grown with us, starting a couple of years back with some Fisher-Price Wheelies based on Lightning McQueen and Holly Shiftwell (pictured left), both of which are now favorites of little Finley since Addie has “graduated” into the world of Diecast. Taking to the skies above the World of Cars has opened up a whole new element of imaginative play. Kids love PLANES.
Now, there’s been some rumblings that since Disney PLANES are now encompassing half of the shelf space previously-occupied by Disney•Pixar CARS, that toys based on Lightning McQueen and friends might be nearing the end of their run. While I’d hate for that to be the case, I’m already thinking that Christmas is less than four months away… could another trip to Radiator Springs and Propwash Junction be in order? I think so. I’m ready to Rock… and Roll!
