It's been a weird year for gardening, and with Fall finally upon us, I wish we had a bit more to harvest. One of our apparent successes this year is technically still a work-in-progress, but I wanted to highlight it here on The Rock Father Gardening Blog: Pumpkin on a Stick. For the past two seasons, Addie and I have purchased a variety of "fun" seed packets from a local greenhouse (which sadly closed this past July after around 30 years of business), mostly gourds and a few other oddities from a company called Livingston Seed.
I was planning on writing this blog a few weeks ago, when as far as I'm concerned, Summer 2012 officially came to an end. The date? August 8. The reason? I picked up a 12-pack of BLUE MOON Brewing Company's "Brewmaster's Autumn Sampler." If Fall Beer is Here - Summer is over. At least that's what I told myself.
For the better part of the past decade, horror fans in and around the Chicago area have been attending the annual 24-hour film festival known as THE MASSACRE each and every October. With the spooky Fall season close at hand (my favorite season of all), The Massacre will return once more, moving to a larger location - The Portage Theater (4050 N. Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60641) on October 20th. Presented by Movieside, as always, The Massacre (Get tix | RSVP on Facebook) will boast round-the-clock feature films, vintage trailers, vendors, special guests, a costume contest, zombie make-up station, a charity auction for Vital Bridges, and more. Having attended several of these myself, I heartily recommend checking it out. Full details below...
I was really excited a few weeks back when I caught wind of a new album from THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE via their social media streams. With October approaching fast, there is no more perfect band for the Fall season - a fact that I've noted in past coverage that I've written for other outlets. TBM is fantastic, and thus I'm really looking forward to the October 9th release of HIDE AND SEEK via Metropolis Records. Tour dates have been announced for Oct-Dec, and you can view those below.
It's the end of July and since Hobby Lobby has their Christmas stuff displayed in full glory, that means that Halloween is just three months away! I kid, because I love Hobby Lobby and Christmas... but HALLOWEEN? That's my favorite holiday of them all. In fact, I can't wait to start covering all things ghoulish here on The Rock Father this year, and today I've got the first bit of Halloween-themed news for the season... On October 9, award-winning kids' musician ANDY Z will release his fifth studio album, THE GRAND SCREAM OF THINGS, a musical Halloween audio play created especially for kids in their “tweens."
As a big fan of Starbucks' Annual Pumpkin Spice Latte (or just about anything pumpkin this time of year), I've been hunting for the perfect recipe to make some Pumpkin Spice at home. A little Pumpkin Spice without the $5 price has been a mission, then earlier this month, the Redeye here in Chicago published a recipe that I tried out and have been tweaking a bit as well. Below the jump you can find out what you'll need to start brewing your own. While the Starbucks version is said to contain ''four pumps of flavored syrup,'' The Rock Father™ is sharing a version that tastes a lot more pumpkin-y, because it uses real pumpkin.
