Following the news that Frank Zappa will be going back on tour, thanks to the magic of holograms, the Zappa Family Trust and Universal have announced The Halloween 77 Box Set - a 40th Anniversary celebration of Zappa's massive residency at The Palladium in New York City. Zappa and his band played six shows from October 28-31, 1977, with all of them recorded and four filmed for BABY SNAKES. Now, all six concerts are being released on CD and Digital, packaged together with one of 2017's coolest Halloween costumes: A vintage-style Frank Zappa done in the tradition of the classic Ben Cooper costumes that kids like myself used to wear.
For a character that first hit screens more than 40 years ago, it's interesting to note just how hard it is to get the look of Chewbacca just right. Licensees have now had four decades to work on their Chewie products, yet in certain categories, nailing the proper look of the STAR WARS galaxy's most famous Wookiee is still a real problem. In fairness, any character or creature with full-body hair is challenging to pull-off, but I'd argue that the co-pilot of the Millennium Falcon deserves a lot more care than he gets. That said, here's a look at an assortment of different "Chewbacca" costumes that are available for purchase right now. From 1977's STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE to 2017's STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI, Chewie's had a variety of looks (and we may see a different one in Ron Howard's Untitled Han Solo Movie next year), but most of these look nothing like the Porg's beloved friend.
A few days ago, the girls and I were over at The Home Depot - picking up our first round of fall flowers, and scoping out the new assortment of Halloween decor that THD has to offer. They've upped their game this year, and I could do some serious damage if set loose in there. Truth be told, Home Depot can be a dangerously-tempting place, and I'm still paying off our last project loan from when we gutted the bathrooms here at Rock Father HQ and rebuilt them from the bare studs. When it comes to the "Big Two" on the holiday front - Halloween & Christmas - I'm all over the decor, so it was a nice coincidence when The Home Depot sent us their new WindowFX Plus Projector for review.
I often cite that the first record I distinctly recall asking my parents to buy me was Michael Jackson's THRILLER. I still have my well-worn vinyl album from 1982, and while I've played Jackson's works for The Rock Daughters since birth, it's really been over the course of just the past few months that they've really started to enjoy them. Now, with the Halloween season soon to be here, Epic/Legacy Recordings in collaboration with The Estate of Michael Jackson, will release Michael Jackson SCREAM, a collection of hits inspired by Michael's love for season, available beginning September 29, 2017.
One of the biggest surprises this summer was that ahead of THE EMOJI MOVIE was an all-new HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA short. I had no idea that PUPPY was set in Dracula's world, and that's a good thing as the kids were really surprised when we screened it at the birthday party for our oldest "Rock Daughter." Now, with an animated series airing on Disney Channel and a new feature film headed for theaters next summer, news has come into Rock Father HQ that Sony Pictures Consumer Products has partnered with Jazwards to develop a Hotel Transylvania toy-line, while Simon & Schuster Children's Group, Papercutz Comics and Bendon Publishing, will create a range of books inspired by the film franchise and new television series. The goodies will begin hitting stores leading up to the release of Sony Pictures Animation's HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3, in which Mavis surprises Dracula with a family voyage on a luxury Monster Cruise Ship -- the first time the characters will venture outside of the hotel.
I originally planned on posting this on August 15. I wish I would've, but more time-sensitive things got in the way over the course of the past two weeks. Most of this has been written, sitting as an unpublished draft awaiting release to the public for the purpose of standing up for what's right. For standing up for the power and glory of all-things pumpkin spice!
You see, it's that time again. As the kids are back-to-school, your favorite (and not-so-favorite) retailers are gearing up for the holidays. In fact, it seems that there's more holidays than ever these days (every day is a "National _____ Day" of some kind), but as we look toward the end of the year, it's the "Big Two" that always loom large: Christmas and Halloween. In many cases, "Christmas in July" is more than a simple advertising promotion, and chains like Hobby Lobby are locked, stocked and ready to rock with the festive gear as early as June. As we hit August, familiar shades of orange and black start popping up with increasing frequency as Back-to-School departments are flipped in preparation for the most glorious day of the year, October 31. And, just as signs of the holidays begin to appear, it's time once again for chronic complainers to start whining about what they deem "too early" (online it's usually done with excessive CAPS and !!!), and likewise many media outlets to start running what's basically a stock article at this point about "Christmas Creep" and the like. Newsflash: none of this is new, and the true problem lies in the complainers and their ridiculous "outrage."
