This is the first year that we’ve done a real “Back-to-School” here at Rock Father HQ. Sure, Addie just turned four, but she’s in “Pre-K” – coming out of “twos and threes” Preschool and getting into the “fours and fives.” I registered her yesterday and paid the first month (this stuff is getting expensive), and we did some Back-to-School shopping. As I’m re-experiencing the school world again through my daughter, I can’t help but think back to my own school days… and some of the mishaps and misadventures that took place. Including the preventable Mix-Up.
I think I was in third grade when I had my first Mix-Up Mishap… two identical Chicago White Sox backpacks, each blue nylon and displaying the 1983 SOX logo in white. Let’s just say the end result was akin to those movies where a gangster and an unsuspecting good guy manage to swap bags at an airport or bus terminal after having the misfortune of standing next to each other and setting their bags down. But, instead of a frantic chase, you end up with two crying kids that don’t have the right stuff. That White Sox backpack would later get me into trouble again, but only when a yellow jacket decided to somehow land between the pack and my back. I sat back on the bus and got quite the sting.
So how can you avoid a Back-to-School Mix-Up Mishap of your own?
- Teach your little ones to look. Just because something seems right on the surface, it might not always be what it appears. Like TRANSFORMERS, there’s often “more than meets the eye.”
- Don’t panic. This goes for kids and parents alike. When it comes to school, you’ll see those kids again – probably tomorrow.
- Avoid the Mix-Up by labeling your kids items with School Labels from Bright Star Kids. They’re scratch-resistant, waterproof, and stick to almost anything. AND you can remove them later with no residue.
