Bill Maher took his Club Random podcast out of the studio and into Florida, for an exclusive, no-BS chat with Billy Joel, the Piano Man himself.
They dive deep into life, legacy, and Joel’s new HBO doc, Billy Joel: And So It Goes. Joel breaks down what fuels his legendary lyrics, why fame was never the goal, and how to keep your art real. “This documentary made me realize that so many songs of yours that I’ve been listening to for so long and appreciate the lyrics on one level, because they are universal, and then this put color to this black and white drawing of your life that I had had,” Maher says.
Joel jokes, “Talking about music is like dancing about architecture,” but that didn’t stop them from breaking down the poetry behind his biggest hits. Joel even tickled the ivories while reminiscing about their shared love for The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, and more.
Part one of the doc is out now on HBO and HBO Max. Part two will be released on July 25. Together, it’s nearly five hours of raw Joel — stories, music, and never-before-seen footage.
