Okay, people — and by “people” I mean the two of you who actually read my reviews [Editor’s note: There are more than two!] — buckle up, because I’ve got one doozy of an album to talk about. I’ll try not to gush too much, but I can’t make any promises.
The album in question is Dead to Rights by the one and only METAL CHURCH, out now via Rat Pak Records. And yes, this one absolutely earns the hype.
Let’s start with the lineup. You’ve got the mighty guitar pairing of Kurdt Vanderhoof and Rick Van Zandt, joined by bass icon David Ellefson (Megadeth), powerhouse drummer Ken Mary (Flotsam and Jetsam), and dynamic new vocalist Brian Allen (Vicious Rumors). Let me be clear: Allen blew me away on this record. The guy sounds fantastic.
Now to the music.
The opening one-two punch of “Brainwash Game” and “F.A.F.O.” lands like a Van Damme combo in Bloodsport. Two tracks in and you’re already reeling, and the band is only getting warmed up.
The title track “Dead to Rights” hits with force but carries a melodic streak that makes it linger long after it ends. That guitar line stays with you. Don’t be surprised if you’re humming it hours later. I can just imagine this one destroying audiences in a live setting. What I wouldn’t give to see that.
“Deep Cover Shakedown” is just a well-executed piece of metal with all the ingredients stirred to a boil. Now here’s my favorite in “Feet To the Fire.” Not only is it the standout here, but it’s already one of my favorite songs of 2026. I’ll replay this thing three or four times before moving on.
“The Show” is all kinds of metal thrashing mad, like a Caterpillar ‘dozer comin’ through your living room, and “Heaven Knows (Slip Away)” takes that sentiment and runs with it. “No Memory” is another winner, with Allen shining his vocals like a beacon at sea. Chef’s kiss, folks!
“Wasted Time” hits with weight and thunder thanks to Ellefson and Mary being fully locked in as they carry us into battle, while closer “My Wrath” sends things out with a final burst of guitar-fueled fury. It’s like a punch to the kidneys that you WILL actually love.
So, what have we learned? METAL CHURCH has unquestionably delivered THE album of 2026, and I will shout it from the rooftops AND the mountaintops. Dead to Rights is the kind of record that reminds you exactly why this band still matters. And good luck to anybody trying to top it this year. It ain’t happening, folks.
